Privacy and Cookies
This policy explains how the University uses cookies and similar technologies on this website, and how personal data collected through it is handled.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They help the site function correctly, remember your preferences and understand how the site is used.
How we use cookies
Essential cookies enable core functionality such as security, network management and accessibility. The site cannot work without them, so they are always set. We do not use advertising cookies, we do not track you across other websites, and we do not sell or share your data.
How we measure the site
We count visits so we can see which pages are useful and where people get stuck. All of this measurement is first-party: it stays on the University’s own servers and is never shared.
If you agree to analytics, we store one cookie, tum_vid, containing a random code that means nothing outside our own records. It lets us recognise the same browser on a later visit, so we can report how many people use the site rather than only how many visits it receives. It expires 13 months after your last visit and holds no personal information.
If you do not, your visit is still counted, but anonymously: nothing is stored on your device, and the visit is grouped using a one-way code derived from your network address and browser under a key that is replaced every night. That code cannot be turned back into your address and cannot connect your visits from one day to the next, so it is never counted as a returning visitor.
You can change or withdraw your choice at any time using the “Cookies settings” link in the footer.
Managing cookies
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling some cookies may affect how the site works.
Third-party cookies
Some pages include content from third parties — an embedded video or map, for example — that set their own cookies. We do not control those; please refer to the relevant provider’s policy.
